Punta Fuego Yacht Club Sailing Championship Race 3 results
The 3rd race of the Punta Fuego Yacht Club Sailing Championship was held on January 31, 2015 on an overcast day with 15-20 knots northeast winds. Before the race would start, two participants managed to capsize while awaiting the flag sequence to commence racing. Race 1 and 2 were both two round windward leeward legs from starting line set off Twin Island and windward mark south of PFYC marina. Race 1 saw Philip Hagedorn, Martin Marty and Jojo Silverio off the line at the same time on a starboard tack towards Punta Fuego coast line. Jojo tacked early to take advantage of the favoured side with more wind but choppier seas while Philip and Martin decided to go deep towards the coast in less wind but smoother waters. Jojo rounded the mark first, followed by Martin and Philip. The group split the downwind leg with Jojo going to the favoured side with Marty and Philip choosing the tricky wind tunnel off Balaytigue bay along the Punta Fuego coast. All boats closed rounding the pin mark with Jojo staying longer on the favoured side and gained towards the windward mark and led comfortably to win race 1with Martin and Philip following. Race 2 saw most sailing longer on the favoured twin island side which kept the fleet racing closer to each other this time. Jojo managed his second bullet of the day with Martin and Bruno Vergnes following closely. Race 3, saw the leaders caught by surprise and miss the start line at the gun due to a huge wind shift forcing most to tack on the line on port towards Twin islands. Philip managed to sail wide and round windward mark by a large margin over Martin and Jojo trailing behind. Philip on new found speed and inspiration, continued to pull away from the trailing fleet rounding Twin Island on starboard and back towards the windward mark to win by a large margin over Martin and Jojo close behind unable to find a way to pass throughout the course.

1. Jojo Silverio / Santi Picornell
2. Martin Marty / Monchu Garcia
3. Philip Hagedorn / Cons Castaneda
The accumulated score after 3 races (with one drop):

13th Punta Fuego Regatta Results
With winds ranging from 20 to 35 knots northeast winds on January 24-25 weekend, 45 entries in 6 classes gathered for the 13th annual Club Punta Fuego Regatta held in scenic Nagusbu, Batangas, 100 kilometres from Manila. The Punta Fuego regatta set just before the Subic-Boracay and Boracay Cup regatta scheduled for late February, is the first major regatta in the Philippine sailing calendar. The traditional 14 nautical mile Fortune Island race on the first day of racing was not undertaken for safety reasons by international race officer Jerry Rollin. There was concern over the difficulty to monitor and rescue the relatively large number of Hobie 16 and Hobie getaways in the open seas with winds gusting over 35 knots. The fleet instead raced the same distance north and south along the picturesque Batangas coast rounding several islands for the morning race. A lunch prepared at the club’s Terrazas de Punta Fuego facility, a seaside beach destination 3 nautical miles away from the marina, revitalised the sailors from the morning’s draining race. A windward leeward for some and a race back to Punta Fuego Yacht Club completed the racing for the first day. Jude Echauz’s TP’52, Centennial 3 and Martin Tanco’s Sydney 46, Centennial 2 battled to take the top two positions respectively in the keel boat class, while Mike Ngu and Boyet Magsanay took the top position in the Hobie 16 class despite capsizing several times to win the gruelling first race. The second day of racing saw the winds drop 10 knots to a respectable 20 knots and after a difficult race the previous day, a combination of windward leewards and island passage races completed the perfect weekend of racing for all classes. Highlight of the regatta was the first time participation of 5 ocean catamarans between 40ft-50ft with most reaching record speeds for their skippers. Robin Wyatt’s, Lagoon 500, Double Trouble took home 3 bullets to win the multihull class. As is the first day, Ernesto Echauz continued with a perfect score to win the keel boat and Mike Ngu and Boyet Magsanay taking the Hobie 16 class win, with both adding their names on the perpetual trophy of the13th edition of the Punta Fuego Regatta.

Punta Fuego Yacht Club is the host of the annual Punta Fuego Regatta which is on its 13th year, scheduled in late January over two days when the northeast winds pick-up and fair weather signal the start of of the sailing season. The regatta format is open to multiple classes of sailboats such as keelboats, ocean multihulls and one class design Hobie cats and dinghies. Depending on the class, courses range from the traditional 14 nautical mile race to Fortune island, other island passages and windward leewards.
A new addition to the sailing program of the club is the monthly Sailing Championship Series- Hobie Getaway Class scheduled on the last Saturday of the month. The popularity of the Hobie Getaway in the area has seen the fleet increase to 15 boats. After organising the sailing series, the club also plans to introduce a junior and adult sailing program to promote the sport and increase social and family activities at the marina.

Punta Fuego Yacht Club Sailing Championship (Getaways) Series: Race 2 Results
The 2nd race of the Punta Fuego Yacht Club Sailing Championship Series Hobie Getaway class was held on November 29 together with the Philippine Inter Island Sailing Foundation PHINSAF Tali Beach Travellers Series for Hobie 16 class. This gave the PFYC Getaway sailors an opportunity to race an extra 3 races the next day and a chance to win a PHINSAF Traveller Series trophy for Hobie Getaway class. 10-15 knots North East wind conditions which made it perfect day for race office Jerry Rollin to get 2 windward leeward races and a long island passage race that took the fleet around Loren Island and Twin Island. Race 1 saw Phillip Hagedorn/Cons Castaneda lead the start up to the first mark with Bruno Vergnes/Delphine Vaudiau, in their first race of the season, and Jojo Silverio/Santi Picornell following closely behind. The run back to the line saw different tactics which eventually saw Jojo cross the line just ahead of Phillip and Bruno. In race 2, Phillip managed a good start again with Denise Celdran/Carlitos Ortoll, in their first race as well and Jojo following closely behind in the same order to the top mark, again different tactics on the run to the line saw Jojo cross 1st, Denise in 2nd and Phillip in 3rd. In race 3, the island passage, saw Denise make a great start followed by Phillip, Bruno, Jojo and Josemari Cuervo/Willi Treichler, on their first race, and continued in the same order to the top mark and along Punta Fuego Point to Loren island. A misjudged lay line and a late tack rounding Loren Island saw Denise being winded by the island which gave the opportunity for Phillip, Bruno and Jojo to pass. Jojo then passed Bruno on the west end rounding of Loren island and the same position were held rounding Twin Islands up to the finish line.
The Hobie getaway, Hobie 16 sailors, members and supporters around 40 people in total gathered at the Barracuda bar after the day of perfect racing where music, happy hour and a large paella was served. Many thanks to Jerry Rollin and the PFYC staff for providing Race Management and Safety, Philippine Inter-Island Sailing Foundation (PHINSAF) for joining the Saturday festivities at Barracuda Bar and organising 3 getaway races on Sunday, Club Punta Fuego management and Barracuda staff for the happy hour festivities, Sylvain Liechti for the race pictures. JERRY ROLLIN: RACING TIPS:
Making a Good Start: Starting properly is the most important aspect of the race. Stay close to the starting or committee boat so you can see and hear the start sequence and synchronise your watch. Keep watching the flags to check your timing. Make a practice start usually on a starboard tack. For inexperienced racers, best to stay within 30 to 45 seconds from the start signal to the line approaching the starting/committee boat parallel to the start line. Once the start signal goes, watch for other boats ahead and below who have right of way and be prepared to give way then harden up on starboard tack as you cross the line. Practice make good starts.

Punta Fuego Yacht Club Sailing Championship (Getaways)
Series: Race 1 Results
A bright sunny and almost windless day greeted the Hobie Getaway sailor as they arrived in the morning to prepare their boats for the 1st race of the Punta Fuego Yacht Club Sailing Championship Series. However by the time Race Officer Jerry Rollin started the competitors briefing in the Baracuda Bar and Punta Fuego Yacht Club Marina the wind had started to pick up.
The first race, a windward / leeward course started in 10 knots of wind from offshore, which was not the expected direction as the North East Amihan wind had been blowing for some days already. Soon after the start of the race the wind died but after 20 minutes Maria and Joe Hagedorn had completed the first windward and leeward legs having shown their wind reading experience but all other boats where left drifting with the current with no wind and drifting away from the windward mark. Maria and Joe were given the win at the leeward mark and all others were given their place on the water.
It did not take long for the Amihan wind to come in at 6 to 8 knots. The second race was another windward / leeward course, which saw most boats start on the committee boat side of the line while Maria & Joe taking the pin end and making it first to the windward mark closely followed by Monchu & Bianca Garcia and Jojo Silverio & Santi Picornell, the same order at the finish line.
The Race Officer was not satisfied that there was enough wind for the planned island race around Loren Island and Twin Islands so he set the course to the windward mark, around Twin Islands and back to the finish off the PFYC Marina. Most boats decided this time to start at the pin end after seeing it in the previous race as the favoured side. Eddie Legarda/Jose Gonzalez were first to the windward mark with boats of Monchu, Marina and Jojo following closely behind towards the run (downwind) to Twin island with each boat taking different lines and trim settings. Just before reaching twin islands, Jojo passed Maria and Monchu, and bad luck befell upon Monchu with a rigging lapse forcing his mast to fall and ending his race. Gybing around Twin Island, Maria re-passed Jojo who decided to take a wider line around the island. On the final beat (upwind) to the finish line, Eddie and Maria were battling closely with Jojo about 100 meters behind but sailing a higher line to the finish. An exciting finish saw Eddie and Maria having to tack back to make the finish line while Jojo was able to cross ahead, all three within 10 seconds of each other in an exciting finish to a great day of racing.
All boats where back in the marina by 1700h and the Baracuda Bar was ready for the awarding and entertainment for the competitors, and their many family members and friends who came to support them and the event. Many thanks to Jerry Rollin and Manu Mantecon for providing Race Management and Safety, Rayomarine, Hobie Philippines, Philippine WaterSports Hub and Blood Red for prizes.
